Closest Rainforest to Tamarindo

Diriá National Park holds the distinction of being the nearest protected forest ecosystem accessible from Tamarindo, sitting at elevations between 600 and 900 meters where rainfall patterns shift dramatically. The park encompasses 5,426 hectares of transitional forest, a biological crossroads where species from the dry Pacific lowlands meet humidity-dependent plants and wildlife that require year-round moisture. The forest structure changes visibly as trails climb into the highlands. Lower sections feature deciduous trees that shed leaves during the dry season, interspersed with evergreen species clustered near seasonal streams. Above 700 meters, the canopy remains green throughout the year, epiphytes multiply on branches, and the understory supports ferns and moisture-loving shrubs. White-faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, and over 140 bird species inhabit the reserve, with sightings most reliable during early morning hours when animal activity peaks.
